This is the 21st century and making robots is no longer a pipeline dream that only expert engineers can realize. Yes! Even kids, as young as 8 years old, can make their own robots!
In this blog post, we're diving into the captivating realm of DIY robots, tailored especially for children. We'll explore a range of projects that are not only educational but also tons of fun. Whether you're a parent eager to inspire your child's passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) or an educator seeking engaging activities for the classroom or at-home learning, this guide is your gateway to an enchanting world where wires, circuits, and creativity come together to shape the future. So, get ready to roll up your sleeves and embark on an adventure that's bound to ignite a lifelong love for robotics in your young innovators.
Most of these designs will be beginner friendly - so if you’re a beginner and have never made a robot before - not to worry - you will still be easily able to make most of them yourself!
We will be using Avishkaar’s MEX series products to make these robots - the MEX Robotics Starter Kit and the MEX 3-in-1 Animal Set. So, let's start!
- MEX mobile - This is a starter MEX series robot with a high speed gear system that increases the output speed from the source motor and allows the bot to move at a high speed.

- MEX Crane - Another starter robot, but this time with a high torque gear system that increases the output torque of the motor and enables the crane arm to lift heavier weights.

- MEX Snow Sweeper - This bot uses a high speed three gear system which create this fast moving blade motion that can remove all trash and sweep a path in front of it

- MEX Forklift - This is where the mechanism gets a little advanced and much more exciting. Here you get to learn not only how to use a worm gear to change the rotation direction - but you also get to understand how to convert rotational motion to linear motion.

- MEX Dobby - Another slightly advanced bot where kids make a fun walking dobby robot and learn a critical fundamental concept of bar linkages which is really important in most advanced applications of mechanical design.

- MEX Dobby with AI - This is a modified version of Dobby that has been programmed to express its feelings. When it sees an apple, it walks towards it. When it sees a banana, it walks away from it.

- MEX Macaw - A really cute mechanical bird that work with a level and requires no motors to operate - that’s right! Its mechanism is a combination of the three gear system that we used in snow sweeper and bar linkages from dobby.

- MEX Macaw with Motor - This is a motorized version of Macaw that can be controlled with the Avishkaar App.

- MEX Poodle - Another bot that used bar linkages and this time replicates that walk of a cute dog. Make your own pet dog with cool eyes!

And finally,
- MEX Tusker - The toughest MEX robot so far - it is a combination of a lot of different mechanisms and design concepts - animatronics, worm-spur gear drivetrain and animal walk cycles.

Hope this blog excites you to try your hands at Robotics and STEM Toys. In case you don’t have any of the Avishkaar MEX Kits - you can check them out by clicking the links mentioned in this blog.
This is a beginner’s robotics kit which comes with a lot of plastic parts, a motor, LED modules, and a programmable brain, and can be used to make many robots.
They come with a detailed manual inside as well which will help you understand how to build the different robots.
So that’s the end of our top 10 DIY robots you can make at home blog. We have also attached a video below in case you want to check out the movements in detail.
